Myotherapy

Myotherapy is an exercise program designed to counter a tongue thrust type of swallow. The pressure placed on the front teeth by a tongue thrusting swallow pattern (reverse-swallow) usually results in a condition called "open-bite". In an open-bite, there is no contact between the front teeth, even when the back teeth are closed together. In addition to the open-bite, the tongue thrust will often cause spacing between the front teeth. Myotherapy will help close the open-bite and / or spacing so that you can get your braces off!

There are many causes for a tongue thrust pattern. Most often, it is a result of thumb-sucking, mouth-breathing, or heredity. Myotherapy is an attempt to teach the patient a proper swallow pattern, and frequently must overcome a habit that has been present for years. At first the myotherapy exercises will seem difficult and the muscles under the lower jaw may develop some soreness. But, after one or two weeks, the exercises will get easier as the new proper pattern is learned by the brain, tongue, and the swallowing muscles. The tongue is composed of 32 very powerful muscles, so be patient with the process!

Dr. Yorek and staff will teach you the myotherapy exercises. Sometimes you are taught additional exercises to promote proper lip tone and lip seal. It is best to perform these exercises several times each day. The more that you practice your myotherapy, the faster you will see that great new smile when your braces come off. Good Luck!
