The ARCH-WIRE HERBST

The Arch-Wire Herbst is an additional force system that is attached to the orthodontic arch wires.  It is typically used to correct an excessive overjet and can also be used to treat temporomandibular joint (TMJ) problems.  The Arch-Wire Herbst is worn for a period of 4 – 12 months depending upon the age and growth status of the patient, the degree of overjet, or the severity of the TMJ condition.

The Arch-Wire Herbst consists of 3 major components:

        1)    Two tubes that attach near the upper molars

        2)    Two rods that attach near the lower canines

        3)    Small pivot points (4) that allow these tubes and rods to be attached to the arch wires.

Dr. Yorek will adjust the length of these tubes and rods to correct the overjet and/or TMJ condition.

When this appliance is initially connected, the lower jaw will be moved to more forward position and the back teeth may not touch when chewing.  Eating soft foods for the first week will allow you to tolerate this new type of bite.  In adults, the jaw muscles may become fatigued or sore.  Moist heat applied to the jaw muscles and Advil for a few days will help this condition.

Occasionally a rod may become disengaged from its tube if you open too wide.  Usually you can re-insert the rod into the tube yourself with the use of a mirror and a little patience.  If not, Dr. Yorek and staff can quickly re-attach things for you.  It is possible that a rod or tube may detach from its pivot point if too much stress is placed on the lower jaw (i.e. hard foods, chewing your pencil, sports trauma).  Please feel free to call for an appointment to repair this.

The Arch-Wire Herbst technology can create orthodontic miracles for teen-agers and adults.  It makes possible dramatic improvements in overjet and facial esthetics – conditions that were formerly treated only in conjunction with jaw surgery.  It has also eliminated the much dreaded headgear in our practice.  We are excited to be able to use this new technology in our office.  When you see the changes in your child or in your own mirror you will be too!
