The Facial Mask

The Facial Mask is sometimes called “Reverse Headgear” because it is used to move the upper jaw forward.  Facial types that are treated with the Facial Mask have inherited under-developed upper jaw, an overdeveloped lower jaw, or most frequently, a combination of the two problems.

This growth disturbance frequently results in a bad bite that has the lower front teeth positioned in front of the upper front teeth (under bite).

This under-bite condition is corrected by using elastic forces to move the upper jaw forward.  Elastics are attached to the Facial Mask and to the upper teeth via an upper expander or braces.  The Facial Mask is usually worn for 12 – 16 hours per day for a period of approximately 4 months.  Dr. Yorek will prescribe your exact schedule for wearing your appliance.

It is important to wear your Facial Mask as much as possible.  Part-time or intermittent wear will not advance the upper jaw.  The window of opportunity to advance the upper jaw is small, so the best results are achieved by establishing good wear habits immediately.  Most children do not wear their appliance to school, so this means that is goes on right after school and is worn until the next morning!

Treating under bite conditions is one of the most difficult challenges for orthodontics.  The genetic growth imbalance involved in these patients makes future jaw surgery a possibility.  The Facial Mask is your best solution to a complicated situation, so make the most of this opportunity.
